How Often You Should Wash Your Bras, Sheets & Body

Adulting can be surprisingly complicated, and even if your hygiene routine seems perfectly fine, experts often recommend habits that many people don’t follow. From how often to wash towels to how frequently to shower, the advice may come as a surprise. The good news is that if you’ve been doing things differently, you’re far from alone, and making a few small adjustments can improve both cleanliness and comfort.

One area people often overlook is household linens. Bath towels are best washed after about three uses, or every two to three days, while hand towels should be cleaned even more frequently because they are used by multiple people throughout the day. Bed sheets should ideally be changed once a week to reduce the buildup of sweat, oils, and dust. Pillowcases and mattress protectors can usually go longer between washes, but rotating them regularly helps support healthier skin and a cleaner sleeping environment.

Showering habits can also vary more than many people realize. Dermatologists commonly recommend that most people shower every two to three days rather than every day, as frequent washing—especially with very hot water—can strip the skin of its natural oils and cause dryness. Hair washing depends on factors such as hair type and scalp oiliness, but for many people, washing hair two to four times per week is sufficient. Those with curly or thicker hair may be able to wash less often, while people with oilier hair may prefer more frequent washing.

Bras also benefit from a balanced washing routine. Rather than washing them after every use, many experts recommend cleaning them after three to four wears. It’s also a good idea to avoid wearing the same bra on consecutive days, allowing the elastic to regain its shape and helping the garment last longer. Adopting simple habits like these can improve hygiene, protect your clothing, and make everyday routines more effective.
