Hidden Car Safety Features You Might Not Know About

Modern vehicles include a wide range of built-in safety features that often work without drivers noticing. One of the most misunderstood is the Traction Control System (TCS) or Electronic Stability Control (ESC). These systems are designed to stay switched on because they help reduce skidding and improve stability on wet, icy, or slippery roads. They should only be turned off in specific situations, such as when a vehicle is stuck in deep snow, mud, or sand and the wheels need to spin freely to regain traction.

Many cars also come equipped with other important safety technologies, including airbags, seatbelt reminders, and lane-keeping assistance. Together, these features help lower the risk of accidents and provide extra protection for both drivers and passengers. Understanding how each system works can make a significant difference during unexpected situations.

Another valuable but often overlooked feature is the emergency trunk release located inside the trunk of most modern cars. If someone becomes trapped inside, this glow-in-the-dark latch allows them to open the trunk and escape. It’s also worth knowing whether your vehicle’s rear seats fold down, as they may provide another route into or out of the trunk during an emergency. In some vehicles, the metal rods from the headrest can also be used to help shatter a side window if the doors cannot be opened.

While modern technology greatly improves vehicle safety, it should never replace responsible driving habits. Keeping your car properly maintained, paying attention to the road, and learning about your vehicle’s emergency features are among the best ways to stay safe. Spending a little time becoming familiar with your owner’s manual today could prove invaluable if an emergency ever occurs.
