They weren’t afraid. That was the first thing I noticed.
Two deer stepped out of the woods while I was tossing hay. Instead of running away, they stood still and watched me. The larger one stayed back, while the smaller one looked straight at me with an unusually calm expression.
I laughed, took a photo, and posted it online with the caption, “Unexpected visitors today.” A moment later, the smaller deer walked up to the fence and stopped just a few feet away. It lowered its head, and I noticed a small bundle wrapped in dark cloth lying near the fence. Inside was an old wooden box containing a heavy silver locket engraved with strange symbols I had never seen before.
When I looked up, the deer had already turned toward the forest. It paused briefly, almost as if inviting me to follow. Curious, I walked after it. The deeper I went, the quieter everything became until I reached a hidden clearing with a massive black-branched oak tree. The deer stood beneath it for a moment before disappearing into the trees.
Near the base of the oak, I found disturbed soil covering a stone tablet marked with the same symbols as the locket. Beneath it was an aged parchment that read: “For the one who is chosen: The truth is not safe. The truth is not gentle. But if you seek it, follow the signs. This is only the beginning.” Later, I discovered an old legend describing a secret order that protected something known as The Veil, claiming the locket was a key and the deer were its messengers. Whether the story was true or not, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had stumbled into a mystery far older than I could understand.
