A study published in Nature Communications explored how rising temperatures, population growth, and expanding access to air conditioning could affect the global climate by 2050. The researchers concluded that, without significant improvements in technology and cleaner energy production, the growing demand for cooling could contribute to additional warming. Even modest increases in average global temperatures can make heat waves, droughts, and other extreme weather events more intense.
Air conditioning is already among the fastest-growing sources of electricity demand worldwide. More than 1.5 billion residential units are currently in use, and experts expect that number to increase substantially over the coming decades. During periods of extreme heat, millions of air conditioners operating at the same time can place heavy pressure on electrical grids, raising the risk of power shortages and blackouts in some regions.
Scientists emphasize that the answer is not to stop using air conditioning, since it plays a critical role in protecting people from heat-related illness and death, particularly older adults and other vulnerable groups. Instead, they recommend investing in cleaner energy sources, more energy-efficient cooling technologies, better-insulated buildings, and environmentally safer refrigerants. These improvements could help meet the growing need for cooling while reducing its impact on the planet.
