If your dog is sniffing your genital area, it means you have…

As a pet owner, one of your responsibilities is not only providing food and care but also understanding your dog’s natural behavior. A habit that often catches new owners off guard is when dogs sniff people’s private areas. Although it may seem embarrassing, experts say this behavior is a completely normal and instinctive way for dogs to gather information about the people they meet.
Dogs experience the world primarily through their sense of smell. According to canine behavior expert Master Bowie, sniffing is how dogs “gather information and say hello.” Humans have apocrine sweat glands that release pheromones carrying information about age, sex, emotional state, and certain aspects of health. Because these glands are concentrated in the armpits and groin, dogs often sniff those areas to collect scent-based information, especially since reaching a person’s armpits is usually difficult.
Since dogs cannot communicate with words, scent acts as their primary language. Sniffing is their version of a handshake or introduction, allowing them to learn about both humans and other dogs. While this instinctive behavior is completely natural, it can be redirected if it makes you or your guests uncomfortable. Using positive reinforcement, treats, and commands such as “sit” or “stay” can teach your dog more appropriate ways to greet people.
Training should always be gentle and consistent, rewarding your dog for following commands instead of punishing its natural instincts. Understanding why dogs sniff can help strengthen the bond between you and your pet while making interactions more comfortable for everyone. With patience, guidance, and respect for your dog’s instincts, you can encourage good manners without discouraging its natural curiosity.
