Planting Flower Bulbs Using Egg Cartons: A Simple Trench Method

Planting flower bulbs in neat, evenly spaced rows can be difficult, particularly when working with a large number of bulbs. An easy and budget-friendly solution is to use recycled cardboard egg cartons as planting guides inside a trench. This eco-conscious method helps maintain consistent spacing while keeping bulbs neatly arranged throughout the planting process.

To try this technique, dig a trench at the recommended depth for your chosen bulbs. Place empty cardboard egg cartons along the bottom of the trench, then position one bulb in each cup with the pointed end facing upward. Once all the bulbs are in place, cover the cartons with soil and water thoroughly. As the cardboard naturally decomposes, it helps keep the bulbs from shifting while adding organic matter to the soil.

This planting method is ideal for many spring-blooming bulbs, including tulips, daffodils, crocuses, hyacinths, grape hyacinths, and snowdrops. It can also be used successfully with smaller summer-flowering bulbs such as gladiolus, freesia, and ranunculus. For the best results, use only plain cardboard egg cartons, as plastic, Styrofoam, or wax-coated cartons will not break down properly in the soil.

For healthy blooms year after year, start with firm, high-quality bulbs, plant them at the correct depth, and ensure the soil drains well. Water thoroughly after planting, apply a light layer of mulch to protect the bulbs, and avoid excessive watering during winter. Once flowering has finished, leave the foliage in place until it naturally turns yellow, allowing the bulbs to store energy for the next growing season. This simple egg carton trench method makes bulb planting quicker, easier, and more organized while producing beautifully spaced flowers.
