At first glance, they appear harmless—five tiny green spheres resting on a fingertip. Perfectly round and neatly patterned, they resemble miniature watermelons or polished beads. The capitulum attracts ants, which carry the eggs into their underground nests. After eating only the nutritious outer tip, the ants leave the intact eggs behind in a safe, sheltered environment where they can continue developing.
