Marcus had arrived just after sunrise, standing in the living room with a small bakery bag in his hand when there was an unexpected knock at the door. I wasn’t expecting anyone, so I opened it without a second thought. The moment I saw the young man standing there, I froze. It took a second to recognize my own son, Andrew, older and stronger than when I had last seen him. Before I could speak, he stepped inside, locked eyes with Marcus, and said firmly, “I want him to tell you the truth right now.”
The room fell into complete silence. Marcus stood motionless, still holding the paper bag until it slipped from his fingers, sending fresh bread rolls tumbling across the floor. He didn’t even glance down. “Andrew?” I whispered, struggling to believe he was really standing there. “Hi, Mom,” he replied softly, but he kept his distance, never taking his eyes off Marcus.
Marcus attempted to gather himself, but Andrew calmly pulled out his phone and handed it to me. My hands shook as I scrolled through message after message. They urged him to disappear, told him he was a burden, and insisted he should let me “move on” without him. Each line made my heart sink as the truth slowly began to emerge.
The words on the screen shattered everything I had believed about the previous six years. “No…” I whispered, turning toward Marcus in disbelief. He lowered his head and looked away, unable to meet my eyes, while the silence in the room spoke louder than anything either of us could say.
