6 Different Ways to Use Eggshells in Gardening and Why They Are Beneficial

Instead of throwing eggshells away, consider putting them to work in your garden. Rich in calcium and small amounts of other minerals, eggshells can help improve soil, support healthy plant growth, and even discourage certain garden pests. They offer a simple, eco-friendly way to recycle kitchen waste while giving your plants a natural boost.

One of the most common uses is crushing clean, dry eggshells and mixing them into the soil or sprinkling them around plants as a slow-release source of calcium. Eggshell halves can also be used as small seed starters, allowing young seedlings to be transplanted directly into the garden. Some gardeners even soak or boil crushed shells in water to create a mild liquid fertilizer.

Adding crushed eggshells to compost is another effective way to return nutrients to the soil. Their rough, sharp edges may also help deter slugs and snails when scattered around vulnerable plants, although the effect can vary. If you keep chickens, finely crushed eggshells can occasionally be mixed into their feed to provide additional calcium that supports strong eggshell production.

To make the most of eggshells, allow them to dry thoroughly before crushing or storing them in a dry container. While they are a useful gardening aid, they are not a cure-all. When combined with healthy soil, proper watering, and regular plant care, eggshells can become part of a sustainable gardening routine that benefits both your plants and the environment.
