9 things you should never plug into a power strip

Most of us rely on power strips because modern homes often don’t have enough wall outlets for all of our devices. They’re convenient for charging phones, powering lamps, or connecting entertainment systems, but they’re not designed to handle every appliance. Using them incorrectly can overload the strip, increase the risk of overheating, and in some cases create a fire hazard.

High-powered appliances should always be plugged directly into a wall outlet whenever possible. Items such as air conditioners, space heaters, ovens, refrigerators, washing machines, microwaves, coffee makers, and toasters draw large amounts of electricity, making them unsuitable for most standard power strips. Before using any power strip, check its maximum power rating, which is usually printed on the device or in its instructions.

Another important safety rule is to never plug one power strip into another, a practice known as “daisy chaining.” This can overload electrical circuits and significantly increase the risk of overheating or fire. If you need more outlets, it’s much safer to install additional wall outlets or use a properly rated extension solution instead of connecting multiple strips together.

For sensitive electronics such as computers, televisions, and gaming consoles, use a surge protector rather than a basic power strip. A surge protector helps shield your devices from sudden voltage spikes that can damage electronics. Following these simple electrical safety practices can help protect both your home and your appliances while reducing the risk of electrical accidents.
