The Silent Health Risk Hiding in Your Lingerie Drawer: Are Your Bras Making You Sick?

Many people wear the same bra several times before washing it, but doing so too often can affect both hygiene and comfort. Because bras sit directly against the skin, they are exposed to sweat, body oils, and dead skin cells throughout the day, allowing bacteria and residue to build up over time.

Each time a bra is worn, it absorbs moisture, natural oils, and tiny skin particles. Wearing it again without washing means those substances remain in contact with your skin, which may contribute to irritation, unpleasant odors, or general discomfort, especially in warm weather or after physical activity.

To help keep bras fresh and maintain their shape, many experts recommend avoiding wearing the same bra on consecutive days. Rotating between two or more bras gives the elastic time to recover and allows any trapped moisture to fully dry. In general, washing a bra after every two or three wears is considered a good balance between cleanliness and preserving the fabric.

Proper washing techniques can also extend a bra’s lifespan. Hand washing with cool water and a mild detergent is the gentlest option for protecting delicate materials, underwires, and elastic. If machine washing is more convenient, placing the bra in a mesh laundry bag and using a gentle cycle can reduce wear and tear. Air drying is recommended, as high heat from a dryer can weaken elastic fibers and cause the bra to lose its shape. Regularly checking that your bras still fit properly is equally important, since body shape and size can change over time. With routine washing, proper rotation, and good care, bras can remain more comfortable, supportive, and long-lasting.
