Baggage Handlers Explain Why Tying a Ribbon to Your Luggage Is a Big Mistake

Many travelers use colorful ribbons, scarves, or oversized tags to make their suitcases easier to spot at baggage claim. While the idea seems helpful—especially when so many bags look alike—airport baggage handlers say these accessories can sometimes cause unexpected issues behind the scenes.

Most airports use automated baggage systems that rely on barcode scanners to sort luggage. Ribbons, straps, or other dangling decorations can occasionally interfere with the scanning process or become caught in conveyor equipment. If the barcode cannot be read correctly, the suitcase may be pulled aside for manual handling, which can increase the chances of delays.

Baggage handlers also recommend removing old airline tags and outdated baggage stickers before traveling. Leftover labels may confuse automated systems, making it harder for scanners to identify the correct destination for your suitcase. In some cases, certain dense foods, such as marzipan, can also appear unusual on security scanners, resulting in additional inspection even though they are generally allowed.

To help protect your luggage, handlers suggest placing your suitcase wheels-up when putting it onto the conveyor belt, as this may reduce the risk of damage during handling. Rather than attaching ribbons or decorations, experts recommend choosing luggage with a distinctive color, pattern, or built-in identifier, making it easier to recognize while allowing airport baggage systems to operate more efficiently.
