Biologist studied 20,000+ people over five years: these are the foods that can slow your ageing

Scientists continue to study how diet affects the aging process, and growing evidence suggests that everyday food choices may influence how the body ages over time. Biologist Marialaura Bonaccio analyzed data from more than 20,000 people to examine the relationship between nutrition, inflammation, and biological aging. Her findings indicate that healthy eating habits may help support long-term health and slow some of the effects associated with aging.

The research found that diets rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, fish, and other fiber-rich foods were associated with healthier aging. These foods contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other beneficial compounds that help protect cells and reduce inflammation. In contrast, diets high in ultra-processed foods, sugary drinks, processed meats, packaged snacks, and refined products were linked to increased inflammation and a faster rate of biological aging.

A key focus of the study was chronic inflammation, which differs from the temporary inflammation that occurs during injury or infection. Persistent, low-grade inflammation can gradually damage tissues and organs over time. Researchers have associated this type of inflammation with an increased risk of conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and cognitive decline.

Although no eating plan can prevent aging entirely, scientists believe that healthy dietary habits can contribute to better overall well-being. Choosing more fresh, nutrient-dense foods while reducing the intake of heavily processed products may help support the body’s natural functions, lower inflammation, and promote healthier aging throughout life.
