It was a quiet Friday evening in Willow Creek when Daniel shared a piece of gossip he had heard at the country club. Relaxing on the couch with Melissa after a long week, he grinned and said, “You won’t believe what the guys were saying today. Apparently, our mailman has slept with every woman on this street… except one.”
Melissa set down her cup of tea and laughed instead of reacting with shock. “Every woman?” she asked. “That’s quite a claim for someone who only spends a couple of minutes at each mailbox.” Daniel shrugged and replied that it was only a rumor, but everyone seemed convinced there was one mysterious exception.
Treating it like a harmless guessing game, Melissa began thinking about their neighbors. After considering several names, she finally smiled and said, “I bet it’s Paula.” When Daniel asked how she had reached that conclusion so quickly, Melissa answered, “She’s the only one who seems like she wouldn’t put up with gossip or foolishness. She keeps to herself and has strong boundaries.”
The couple laughed at how easily rumors can spread in a close-knit neighborhood and grow into elaborate stories with little evidence. By the end of the evening, the conversation had become less about the mailman and more about the way people love to speculate. It was a lighthearted reminder that gossip often reveals more about those who spread it than about the people at the center of the story.
