Don’t Toss Those Eggshells: 17 Ways to Reuse Them

Eggshells are often tossed into the trash without a second thought, but they can be surprisingly useful around the home. Instead of throwing them away, consider giving them a second life through a variety of practical and eco-friendly uses. Repurposing eggshells not only helps reduce waste but can also benefit your garden, kitchen, and household.

In the garden, crushed eggshells make an excellent natural fertilizer by adding calcium and other essential minerals to the soil. These nutrients help strengthen plant cell walls, encouraging healthier growth and more vibrant flowers. Sprinkling crushed shells around plants can also discourage slugs and snails, providing a natural alternative to chemical pest repellents. Adding eggshells to compost is another great option, as they gradually break down and enrich the compost with valuable minerals.

Eggshells also have several handy uses in the kitchen. A few crushed pieces added to coffee grounds before brewing may help reduce bitterness, while their mildly abrasive texture makes them useful for scrubbing cookware and removing stubborn stains from mugs without causing damage. They can even be used as biodegradable seed starters—simply fill the shell with soil, plant a seed, and later transfer the entire shell into the garden, where it will naturally decompose.

Beyond gardening and cooking, eggshells have a variety of creative household applications. Ground shells can help sharpen blender blades during cleaning, and finely crushed shells are sometimes added to homemade toothpaste as a natural source of calcium. Others use them in DIY skincare treatments or educational science projects for children. These simple shells demonstrate that everyday household waste can be transformed into something useful, making it easier to live more sustainably while reducing unnecessary waste.
