How Many Circles Can You Spot? This Fun Brain Teaser May Surprise You

The “circle counting” personality test is a viral optical illusion that claims the number of circles you see can reveal whether you have narcissistic tendencies. The image typically features overlapping circles arranged in a complex pattern, and viewers are challenged to count how many they can find. Social media posts often pair the results with bold personality interpretations, suggesting that a simple visual task can uncover hidden aspects of a person’s character.

According to many versions of the test, seeing fewer circles may indicate narcissistic traits, while spotting more circles is said to reflect empathy or emotional awareness. Some versions even claim that finding all the circles quickly is a sign of exceptional intelligence or perception. Although the wording varies from one post to another, they all promote the same idea—that the way you interpret the image reveals important details about your personality.

In reality, there is no scientific evidence to support these claims. Narcissism is a complex personality trait that exists on a spectrum and, in some cases, may be diagnosed as Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) by qualified mental health professionals using comprehensive clinical assessments. A visual puzzle or online optical illusion cannot accurately measure or diagnose such a condition.

What these optical illusions actually demonstrate is how the brain processes visual information. Differences in attention to detail, pattern recognition, visual perception, and the way the brain organizes shapes can all affect how many circles a person notices. While these challenges are entertaining and often go viral online, they should be viewed as fun brain teasers rather than reliable tools for evaluating personality or mental health.
