The first time you open your trash can and see maggots, it can be a shocking experience. The unpleasant smell, the movement, and the sudden realization that your garbage is full of larvae can make you think something is seriously wrong. In reality, maggots are not a sign that your home is dirty—they are simply the larvae of flies taking advantage of warm temperatures, food waste, and easy access to organic material.
Flies can enter a trash bin within seconds, lay eggs on leftover food, meat scraps, or other organic waste, and leave without being noticed. Within a short time, those eggs hatch, and the tiny larvae begin feeding. This process happens quickly, especially during warm weather, which is why infestations can seem to appear overnight.
The good news is that removing maggots is usually simple. Start by disposing of the trash, then thoroughly clean the entire bin, including the lid, edges, and corners where eggs may still be hiding. Hot water, vinegar, and a good scrub can help remove both the larvae and any remaining residue. Once cleaned, allow the bin to dry completely before using it again.
Preventing future infestations is even easier. Keep trash bags tightly sealed, wrap food scraps securely, rinse the bin regularly, and always keep the lid closed. You can also sprinkle a small amount of salt, lime, or diatomaceous earth in the bottom of the bin to make it less attractive to flies, while citrus peels or other strong natural scents may help discourage them. With a few simple habits, your trash can can stay clean and free of unwanted visitors.
