If you see these painful red bumps, you may have dyshidrotic eczema

One skin condition that commonly flares up during the spring is dyshidrotic eczema. Although there is no permanent cure, it can usually be managed with the right treatment and skincare routine. The condition is known for causing small, intensely itchy blisters that typically appear on the hands and feet.

Eczema is a group of inflammatory skin conditions, also known as dermatitis, that affects millions of people worldwide. During a flare-up, the skin may become red, swollen, itchy, and develop fluid-filled blisters that can ooze before forming a crust. While allergic reactions often trigger eczema, genetics can also play a role, and the condition is not contagious. Dyshidrotic eczema, also called pompholyx, is one of the most common forms and usually appears symmetrically on the palms, fingers, and soles, producing tiny, deep-seated blisters that often heal with peeling after several weeks.

This condition is also known by several other medical names, including acute and recurrent vesicular hand dermatitis, acute palmoplantar eczema, cheiropompholyx when it affects the hands, and podopompholyx or pedopompholyx when it affects the feet. Not every rash or skin inflammation is caused by dyshidrotic eczema, so obtaining an accurate diagnosis before beginning treatment is important. Common symptoms include deep blisters on the fingers, toes, palms, and soles, along with itching, redness, flaking, cracked skin, scaling, and pain.

People with contact dermatitis, atopic eczema, or hay fever have a greater chance of developing dyshidrotic eczema, and secondary skin infections can sometimes slow the healing process. Although flare-ups cannot always be prevented, maintaining a consistent skincare routine can help strengthen the skin’s protective barrier and reduce irritation. Treatment commonly involves corticosteroid creams or ointments, while more severe cases may require prescription medications or injections recommended by a healthcare professional.
