Allison Fisher, a 20-year-old woman from Florida, was given what she describes as a second chance at life after doctors discovered she was carrying a massive ovarian cyst. Her health problems began in 2020 with constant stomach pain, while her menstrual cycles became increasingly irregular. Although she knew something was wrong, she avoided seeking medical help because she feared her symptoms would simply be blamed on her weight. Reflecting on that time, Allison admitted she convinced herself the problem would disappear if she ignored it.
She explained that throughout her life, doctors often focused on her weight regardless of the reason for her visit, leaving her feeling unheard. As time passed, she noticed her stomach becoming unusually hard and swollen. Remembering articles she had read about ovarian cysts, she suspected that might be the cause. The swelling eventually became so severe that she said she felt “pregnant with 10 kids.” She could no longer lie on her stomach, and the growing cyst began pressing against her lungs, making it difficult for her to breathe.
Around Christmas 2022, Allison met with gynecologic oncology surgeon Dr. Martin Martino at Ascension St. Vincent’s, who revealed she had a cyst weighing approximately 100 pounds. Doctors determined it needed to be removed immediately. During the operation, they also discovered her other ovary had twisted three times. Surgeons were able to untwist and save it, preserving her fertility and giving her the possibility of having children in the future.
The surgery was successful, and Allison said she finally felt like herself again. She shared that she could see her feet for the first time in years, stand comfortably, wear clothes more easily, and enjoy everyday activities that had become impossible before. Now preparing for weight-loss surgery, she is optimistic about the future. Allison hopes her experience encourages others not to ignore serious symptoms or avoid medical care out of fear of being judged because of their weight. She wants people to know they deserve to be heard and should never be afraid to seek help when something feels wrong.
