Then Eli gently squeezed Hazel’s hand. About ten minutes later, he quietly walked to the DJ booth and asked for the microphone. As the music faded and the room fell silent, he softly said, “Hazel, before the first dance… I need you to look underneath the biggest rose on your dress.” Confused, Hazel knelt down and lifted the largest ivory rose sewn into her skirt. Hidden beneath it was a tiny stitched pocket. With trembling hands, she reached inside and pulled out a carefully folded piece of fabric.
The moment she unfolded it, she gasped as tears filled her eyes. Embroidered in blue thread were words copied from Mason’s handwriting, taken from an old birthday card he had given her years earlier: “You’ll always be my Hazelnut. Promise me you’ll never let anyone convince you you’re anything less than beautiful.” The gym became completely silent as Hazel pressed the message to her chest, overcome with emotion.
Eli then turned to the crowd and explained that Hazel’s mother had allowed him to borrow some of Mason’s old cards. Mason had once promised Hazel that if no one asked her to prom, he would take her himself. Eli said he couldn’t fulfill that promise in the same way, but he wanted to make sure Mason’s love and support were still part of her special night. He also revealed that every oversized rose on Hazel’s dress concealed hurtful comments that classmates had once directed at her, sewing them inside the flowers so they would remain hidden instead of defining her.
Many students lowered their heads as they recognized words they had once spoken. Some quietly wiped away tears before applause began to spread throughout the gym, growing until everyone was standing. For the first time since Mason’s death, Hazel no longer felt the need to hide from her reflection. Surrounded by love and carrying her brother’s memory with her, she embraced the moment with renewed confidence and finally believed in her own beauty once again.
