A new study from researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) suggests that creatine may do more than support muscle growth—it could also strengthen the body’s immune response against cancer. The researchers found that creatine helps energize dendritic cells, specialized immune cells responsible for detecting tumors and activating the body’s defenses. According to the team, this process may improve the effectiveness of immunotherapy, a treatment that currently benefits only some cancer patients. In experiments involving mice, creatine slowed tumor growth, while tests on human immune cells also showed encouraging results. Scientists stress that more clinical research is needed before creatine can be recommended as part of cancer treatment.
The researchers believe creatine could eventually serve two complementary purposes: enhancing the immune response in patients already receiving immunotherapy and improving dendritic cell-based cancer vaccines before they are administered. Professor Lili Yang explained that creatine appears to support not only cancer-fighting T cells but also the broader immune system that helps coordinate those responses. Although these findings are promising, experts emphasize that the results are still in the early stages and should not be viewed as proof that creatine prevents or cures cancer.
Creatine remains one of the most widely used sports supplements because of its well-established effects on physical performance. The body naturally produces some creatine, while the rest typically comes from foods such as meat and fish. As a supplement, it increases phosphocreatine stores in muscles, helping generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body’s primary source of energy during high-intensity exercise. This can improve strength, support muscle recovery, enhance training performance, and increase water content inside muscle cells, often giving muscles a fuller appearance.
Beyond its effects on muscles, researchers have also been exploring creatine’s potential benefits for brain health. Some studies suggest it may help reduce fatigue, support cognitive function during sleep deprivation, lower inflammation and oxidative stress, and possibly reduce the risk of depression and anxiety. Scientists are also investigating whether a stronger immune response associated with creatine could contribute to a lower risk of certain diseases, including some cancers. However, creatine is not without potential side effects. Excessive intake has been linked to digestive discomfort, bloating, and concerns about kidney health in some individuals, making it important to follow recommended dosages and consult a healthcare professional when appropriate.
