Scientists Studied People Who Live to 100, One Surprising Personality Trait Kept Appearing

Scientists studying people who live exceptionally long lives have found that personality may play a meaningful role in healthy aging. While factors such as a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and strong social connections are well-known contributors to longevity, researchers believe that certain psychological traits may also shape how people age and maintain their quality of life.

A research team from the University of Cagliari in Italy studied 125 adults between the ages of 71 and 101 living in Sardinia, a region recognized for its unusually high number of centenarians. The findings revealed that many of these older adults scored higher in openness, a personality trait associated with curiosity, creativity, adaptability, and a desire to continue learning and exploring new experiences.

Researchers suggest that people with greater openness may be more likely to engage in behaviors that promote healthy aging. These include staying mentally active, pursuing hobbies, building meaningful relationships, and embracing lifelong learning. The study also found that participants with higher openness generally reported better emotional well-being, while conscientiousness was linked to greater life satisfaction and resilience. In contrast, higher levels of neuroticism were associated with lower overall well-being.

Although the findings are promising, the researchers emphasize that personality alone does not determine lifespan. Instead, personality traits may influence everyday choices and habits that support long-term health. Because the study was observational and included a relatively small group of participants, it cannot prove that openness directly leads to a longer life. Nevertheless, the research adds to growing evidence that emotional health and positive mental habits may work alongside healthy lifestyle choices to promote successful aging.
