Teabags: 7 household remedies that show why you should never throw away a used teabag again

Used tea bags are often tossed in the trash without a second thought, but they can be surprisingly useful around the house. Instead of throwing them away after brewing your favorite cup of tea, consider giving them a second life with a few practical and budget-friendly uses.

One popular use is for soothing the skin. Cooled black tea bags can provide a calming sensation for mild sunburns or minor burns thanks to the natural tannins they contain. Chilled tea bags are also commonly placed over closed eyes to help reduce the appearance of puffiness after a long day. While these home remedies may offer temporary relief, they are not a substitute for medical treatment when injuries are severe.

In the kitchen, used tea bags can make cleaning easier. Soaking greasy dishes in warm water with a few tea bags may help loosen stubborn food residue, making it easier to scrub pots and pans. Gardeners also find them useful, as compostable tea bags or loose tea leaves can be added to compost or mixed into the soil to provide organic matter that benefits many plants.

Some people also use brewed black tea as part of homemade weed-control solutions or experiment with green tea bags as a traditional home remedy for warts. However, scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited, so they should not replace proven gardening methods or medical treatments. Even so, reusing tea bags in safe and practical ways can help reduce waste while giving everyday household items a little extra value.
