Teen boy drowns while saving four young children from powerful currents – his family reveals his legacy

Back in 2023, Bryce was vacationing with his family in Florida when he noticed a group of young children struggling in powerful rip currents that were repeatedly pulling them underwater.

Without hesitation, the teenager immediately jumped into action to help. But as he entered the water, the situation took an unexpected and tragic turn.

Sixteen-year-old Bryce Brooks from Atlanta was on a family trip in Pensacola when he and his friends saw four younger children they did not know being carried away by the current, according to his father, Shivy Brooks, who spoke at a news conference.

Without thinking twice, Bryce and two of his friends entered the water to try to rescue them.

“While being pulled by the currents himself, Bryce literally called for help — but not for himself. He was calling for help for the little kids he was trying to protect,” Shivy said.

During the rescue attempt, Bryce was pulled under by the current, his father explained. The incident happened on April 6 in an area without lifeguards. Reports stated that yellow flags had been raised at the beach, warning visitors of moderate water conditions.

Shivy later shared a video on Instagram asking people to pray as he rushed to the hospital, where Bryce and a close family friend, Charles Johnson II, known as “Uncle Chuck,” had been taken by helicopter.

“My oldest son Bryce needs our prayers… Bryce went to rescue another child who was drifting away and was pulled under by a strong current himself,” Shivy wrote. “Our dear friend went in to save Bryce and was also affected by the water. Both were taken to local Pensacola hospitals, and at that moment, I did not know their conditions.”

The following day, Shivy shared a heartbreaking message saying, “I never would have imagined waking up to RIP posts with my child’s picture attached to them.”

Bryce later died from cardiac arrest.

“The selflessness it takes for someone to make such a sacrifice, especially at only 16 years old, makes us incredibly proud as parents,” Shivy said. “Let it be known that Atlanta raised a young man who was willing to give his life for people he didn’t even know.”

In the years that followed, Shivy’s social media has been filled with emotional tributes — birthday messages for Bryce, memories of school milestones, Father’s Day reflections for parents who can no longer hug their children, and a heartbreaking video where he prepares to tell his younger son that his older brother will not be coming home.

Although nothing can erase the pain of losing his son, Bryce’s father continues to speak with immense pride about his “baby boy” and the courage he showed in his final moments.
