Warning! If you have found this insect in your home, it’s a sign that you need to…

What looks like a small gray moth can actually be a pantry moth from the Pyralidae family, one of the most common household pests found in stored food. Though it may seem harmless at first, it can spread quickly after entering a home, often hiding inside food packages before anyone notices its presence.

These insects commonly infest flour, rice, pasta, cereals, nuts, dried fruits, and even chocolate. Female moths lay their eggs directly in or near these food sources, allowing the larvae to hatch and feed on the products. As the infestation grows, you may notice tiny worms, silky webbing, or clumped food inside containers and packages.

While pantry moths are not considered harmful to human health, they reproduce at an impressive rate. A small number of moths can quickly become a widespread infestation, with adults flying around kitchen cupboards and larvae contaminating stored foods. Because the eggs are often hidden inside unopened packages, the problem can go unnoticed for weeks.

To prevent an infestation, inspect dry goods before storing them, keep food in airtight containers, and regularly clean pantry shelves to remove crumbs and spilled grains. If pantry moths are discovered, discard any infested food, thoroughly clean storage areas, and monitor the pantry for any remaining insects to stop the cycle from continuing.
