What is the Best AC Temperature When Home?

Finding the right air conditioner temperature is one of the best ways to stay comfortable while keeping electricity costs under control. Most experts recommend setting your thermostat between **75°F and 78°F (24°C–26°C)** when you’re at home. If 78°F feels too warm, 75°F is still considered an energy-efficient option. Managing indoor humidity can also make your home feel cooler without having to lower the temperature further.

When you’re away, increasing the thermostat to **80°F–85°F (27°C–29°C)** can reduce energy consumption while preventing your home from becoming excessively hot. Smart thermostats make this process even more convenient by automatically adjusting the temperature after you leave and cooling the house before you return, providing comfort without wasting energy.

The ideal AC setting depends on several factors, including your home’s size, insulation, local climate, and the number of people inside. It’s also worth remembering that setting the thermostat much lower will not cool your home any faster. Instead, it simply forces the air conditioner to run longer, increasing energy use. Likewise, completely turning off the AC during extremely hot weather may consume more energy than maintaining a slightly higher temperature while you’re away.

Keeping your air conditioning system in good condition can also improve its efficiency. Replacing the air filter every one to three months, sealing leaks around windows and doors, and scheduling annual maintenance all help the system perform better. These simple habits can extend the life of your AC, improve indoor comfort, and reduce cooling costs throughout the summer.
