What You Should Do If a Fish Bone is Stuck in Your Throat

Getting a fish bone stuck in your throat can be uncomfortable and worrying, but in most cases it is not a serious emergency. The first step is to stay calm and assess the situation. Consider whether you can breathe and swallow normally and whether the discomfort is mild or severe. If you have difficulty breathing, swallowing, or experience intense pain, seek immediate medical attention. Minor cases can often be managed safely at home.

A gentle cough is one of the safest ways to try to dislodge the bone naturally. Taking small sips of water or eating soft foods such as bread, bananas, or cooked rice may help move the bone into the stomach, where it will usually pass without causing harm. Some people also find that a teaspoon of olive oil helps lubricate the throat, making it easier for the bone to slide down. Avoid eating crunchy, sharp, or sticky foods, as they may push the bone deeper or increase irritation.

If it feels like the bone is lodged near the back of your throat, you can carefully inspect the area with a mirror and a flashlight. If the bone is clearly visible and easy to reach, it may be removed gently using sterilized tweezers. However, never insert objects deep into the throat or force the removal, as this can cause injury or push the bone farther in.

If the bone remains stuck, causes severe pain, leads to swelling, or makes breathing or swallowing difficult, seek medical care as soon as possible. To reduce the risk of this happening again, choose boneless fish whenever possible, chew your food carefully, inspect fish for small bones before eating, and eat in good lighting. Taking these simple precautions can help prevent an uncomfortable and potentially painful experience.
