Which animal dies after eating chocolate?

Chocolate may be a favorite treat for humans, but for some animals it can be extremely dangerous. The reason is a natural compound found in cacao beans called theobromine. While people can break it down relatively quickly, many animals process it much more slowly, allowing toxic levels to build up in their bodies.

The correct answer is C. Dog. Dogs are the animals most commonly affected by chocolate poisoning because they are likely to eat chocolate if they find it, and their bodies cannot eliminate theobromine efficiently. Even a small amount of dark chocolate or baking chocolate can cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, a rapid heart rate, restlessness, tremors, seizures, and, in severe cases, can be life-threatening.

Chocolate can also be dangerous for other animals. Cats are highly sensitive to theobromine as well, but they rarely eat chocolate because they do not have a strong preference for sweet foods. Horses can also be affected, with chocolate compounds potentially impacting their heart and digestive system. While larger animals such as cattle are less likely to be poisoned by small amounts, consuming large quantities can still be harmful.

If your dog eats chocolate, act quickly. Determine the type of chocolate and the approximate amount consumed, as darker chocolate and cocoa powder contain much higher levels of theobromine than milk chocolate. Contact a veterinarian or an animal poison hotline immediately for guidance. Prompt treatment can significantly improve the outcome. The best protection is prevention—store chocolate securely out of your pets’ reach and offer only treats that are made specifically for animals.
