Which Way Is the Correct Way to Hang Toilet Paper? (The Answer Might Surprise You)

For years, people have debated the “correct” way to hang a roll of toilet paper. Some prefer the paper hanging underneath against the wall, while others believe it should hang over the front. Although it seems like a minor household detail, this simple habit has inspired countless conversations, friendly disagreements, and even lighthearted online debates.
Supporters of the “under” method believe it creates a neater appearance and can help prevent pets or small children from accidentally unrolling the entire roll. Meanwhile, those who favor the “over” position argue that it is easier to locate the loose end, tear off a sheet, and display any decorative patterns on the paper. Some hygiene experts also note that the “over” method may reduce contact with the wall, which could help limit the transfer of germs.
One of the strongest arguments for the “over” position comes from history. In 1891, inventor Seth Wheeler patented the perforated toilet paper roll, and the patent illustrations clearly showed the paper hanging over the front. The design also made it easier to pull and separate sheets along the perforations, leading many people to view this as the original intended orientation.
Ultimately, there is no universal rule for how toilet paper should be hung, and personal preference remains the deciding factor in most homes. Whether you prefer the “over” or “under” method, convenience is what matters most. However, if the debate turns to historical evidence, the original patent gives the “over” position the strongest documented support.
