Why You Still See “WC” on Washroom Signs Around the World

Washrooms, bathrooms, restrooms, and loos are just a few of the names used around the world for places designed for personal hygiene. The terminology differs from one country to another, reflecting local language and cultural customs. In the United States, people commonly use the words “bathroom” or “restroom,” while in the United Kingdom, terms such as “toilet,” “loo,” and “lavatory” are more familiar. For travelers, this variety of names can sometimes be confusing when reading signs in unfamiliar places.

One label that often raises questions is “WC,” which stands for “water closet.” The expression originated during the 19th century as indoor plumbing became more widespread. It originally described a small room containing a flush toilet, usually separated from bathing facilities. Before modern plumbing systems were common, washing and sanitation often took place in different locations, making the dedicated water closet an important innovation.

As plumbing technology improved, the name “WC” remained in use and gradually became an internationally recognized abbreviation. Today, it appears on signs in airports, train stations, hotels, restaurants, and many other public buildings around the world. Although millions of people recognize the symbol, relatively few know the historical background behind the term or why it continues to be used.

Different cultures still prefer different words for the same facility, reflecting their own linguistic traditions and social etiquette. Whether a sign says restroom, bathroom, toilet, loo, lavatory, or WC, it points to the same essential purpose: providing a clean, private space for personal needs. The continued use of “WC” serves as a reminder that everyday language often preserves pieces of history, linking modern convenience with the origins of indoor sanitation.
